Porkie’s Roadhouse from Butcher Block to Barstool

Cypress River Meats has recently expanded its services with the addition of more space on the southwest side of the building, transforming the former adjoining garage into a rustic yet welcoming little lounge named Porkie’s Roadhouse. If you’ve lived in Cypress River – or even anywhere nearby – the name “Porkie’s” needs no explanation. It’s a nod to the late Rene Aubry, whose flavourful sausages became a local favourite. When Brad and Leanne Anderson were preparing to open Cypress River Meats Butcher’s Market, Rene generously shared his special blend of spices with them.

Brad and Leanne, have built their butcher shop on top-quality cuts and custom services. When they opened their market in 2023, it featured a small storefront highlighting local products alongside their premium meats. Last year, they added simple but delicious lunch options – subs, savoury soups, colourful salads, and freshly ground coffee – but with limited space for dine-in customers.

Now, with Porkie’s Roadhouse open, several tables invite patrons to linger over a light lunch or freshly brewed coffee with friends. The aim is simple: serve quality food using the same high-grade meats and local ingredients their shop is known for, and provide a comfortable space to gather, laugh, and unwind.

The Roadhouse is fully licensed for up to 30 guests. While it typically closes at 5:30 p.m., hours are extended for special events – such as hockey draft parties or Winnipeg Jets games on the big screen. Depending on the occasion, events have featured brunches, signature food items, and drink specials.

The response from the community has been enthusiastic. “Although we could squeeze in more seats, 30 is all our licensing allows,” Leanne explained. “We’ve had an awesome response to the events, so reservations are recommended. I’d feel terrible turning anyone away – especially after they’ve driven a ways to get here.”

Looking ahead, the Andersons plan to extend their hours and adding pizza to the menu – both dine-in and takeout – is also on the horizon.

As Leanne stated Brad is creative and there is no limit to what the Roadhouse will offer in the future. “The Roadhouse is something we have been talking about for quite awhile. Brad has lots of ideas of events for the future, but we are just taking it slow and figuring things out as we go.” Jam sessions, open mic nights, sporting events … there is no limit to what will be happening at Porkie’s.

Staying true to their grassroots, organic approach, they’re also planning to introduce craft beer. “We keep tossing ideas around – mostly Brad tosses them to me, as he’s the creative one – but offering craft beer from Section 6 out of Brandon is definitely on our list,” said Leanne. To start, they’ll rotate in one or two flavours to manage inventory and test customer tastes. “We want to keep things fresh and see what our customers enjoy most before expanding.”

With its mix of high-quality food, a fully licensed bar also featuring local craft beer, and a fun, community-centered atmosphere, Porkie’s Roadhouse is shaping up to be Cypress River’s newest favourite gathering spot.
