Cypress River has exciting news to share!

A stunning windmill has recently become the newest resident in their community, generously donated by an anonymous benefactor.

We caught up with Mark Law, the President of the Cypress River Agricultural Society, who enthusiastically detailed the remarkable addition to their agricultural grounds.

“Rocky (Dave Young) was thrilled to discover the windmill and successfully negotiated a deal with the owner, who generously donated this historical piece on the condition of anonymity. Once the agreement was reached, Rocky promptly informed our Board, and plans were swiftly set in motion for its retrieval. Our dedicated volunteers sprang into action, ensuring all logistics were meticulously arranged. We identified the ideal location on the Cypress Ag Grounds and poured a solid concrete pad to support this towering structure.

Kelly Mauws took the lead in expertly disassembling the windmill and transporting it to Cypress River, where Dave Young meticulously restored it, replacing and straightening components to bring it as close to its original condition as possible. “Dave Nicholson and I had the thrilling responsibility of securing it onto its new pedestal.”

Mark conveyed the process in a way that made it sound effortless, but we all recognize the significant effort required to relocate such an impressive piece, standing 32 feet tall.

The tail vane bears the mark of the manufacturer, Baker Manufacturing Company from Evansville, Wisconsin. A little research revealed a fascinating history behind the company. According to their website, Baker Manufacturing originally acquired the wholesale division of the Manitoba Engine Company from Brandon, Manitoba, and began operations as Ames-Baker Limited. A name change in 1931 led to the establishment of Baker Manufacturing Limited, known for products like pumps, engines, tanks, and of course, windmills.

After a stint in Brandon, the company relocated to Winnipeg in 1940, with their headquarters evolving through several addresses before settling at 1333 Richard Avenue. Notably, Baker Manufacturing has become a cornerstone of the groundwater and water treatment industry in Manitoba, having transitioned from plumbing wholesale to a dedicated water systems supplier. An interesting note: A young man named Clark Myers (originally from Belmont), began his career at Baker Manufacturing in 1984. He did leave but returned as the Operations Manager, then was promoted to Sales Manager, and in 1999, Clark purchased the company. Today, it proudly stands as an independent, locally operated business still thriving in our province.

This windmill not only enhances their agricultural theme, but embodies the spirit of collaboration and resilience that defines Cypress River.
