Percherons return home for the winter
As the vibrant hues of autumn begin to fade and the crisp chill of winter approaches, it’s time once again for the annual Conrad ‘Ride Them Home’ event. This cherished tradition, which has been a staple in our community for nearly two decades, marks the transition from harvest season to the first snow.
This year, the spotlight was on 32 magnificent Percherons, the majestic horses that have thrived in the lush Argyle pastures during the warmer months. With winter on the horizon, it’s time for these strong and elegant creatures to return home, and a dedicated team of 23 enthusiastic helpers were on hand to make it happen. In the beginning, this event hosted a small gathering of 7 or 8 riders and, over the years, has flourished into a remarkable show of spirit and camaraderie.
The love for these exceptional horses runs deep in the Conrad family.
Keith Conrad’s grandfather was an early advocate for Percherons, captivated by their strength, stamina, and versatility. Today, this passion continues to flourish as the demand for these stunning animals grows. The Conrad Percheron lines are now among the most sought-after, with generations of the family proudly upholding this legacy. Keith and Shelley’s children have also embraced the tradition, ensuring that the legacy of careful breeding and appreciation for the breed lives on.
Percherons are now also recognized as fantastic riding horses, with this trend continuing to grow! As larger tack becomes more common, more enthusiasts are discovering the joy of riding these gentle giants. This shift reflects a growing appreciation for the breed’s versatility.
Owning a Percheron is not without its commitments.
Each adult horse typically consumes around a gallon of oats and 60 pounds of hay daily, making it a significant investment for any owner.
Yet, for those who choose to welcome these majestic animals into their lives, the rewards far outweigh the costs. There’s a unique joy that comes from caring for these gentle giants, forging bonds that last a lifetime.
As we gather to watch this year’s ‘Ride Them Home’ event, we stand in awe, not only honouring the beauty of the Percherons but also timeless traditions that connect us all.
Let’s cherish the moments shared, the friendships forged, and the legacy of the Conrad family that continues to inspire love for these amazing horses.
Spring will soon be back, and with it, our local pastures will again be filled with these magnificent creatures!
