Baldur United Church celebrates 120 years
In Baldur, like many other communities built by early settlers, the church not only filled spiritual needs, but also acted as a social hub for the community.
As communities grew, the churches also expanded.
In Baldur, the first United Church actually started as the Bethel Church, a small structure that was moved into Baldur and installed on the spot where the current United Church stands. At that time the building was the right size for the existing congregation.
In a few short years, the growth of the congregation exceeded the size of this church and plans were made to build a larger church. Community members came together to make that happen, and in 1904 it was ready to open.
According to the Baldur history book, Come into our Heritage, Charles Couzens, the United Church Sunday School teacher, laid the cornerstone of the new church.
On the day of the first service of worship and dedication, Rev Miller, the resident minister led the congregation, gifting the congregation the pulpit Bible.
Rev. Hamilton Wigle, who was invited to attend as a guest speaker, gifted to the congregation the pulpit.
Epworth League-Bethel’s Young People gifted the organ.
Through the years the Baldur United Church congregation has come together in times of great joy as well as times of trials and tribulations. Throughout it all, they have carried on.
Times may change, but the Baldur United Church has remained strong and vibrant, standing as a testament to the strength and resilience of individuals coming together to make positive things happen.
