Great turnout to celebrate Raystone Centre’s 40th anniversary

The Glenboro Raystone Centre was filled with smiles and celebration on the afternoon of June 19, as many in our community gathered to mark the senior centre’s 40th anniversary. The event drew a full house, much to the delight of the Raystone Centre executive.

Festivities began with barbecued hotdogs, cake, and refreshments, setting a cheerful tone for the afternoon. Guests were welcomed with congratulatory remarks from Glenboro South Cypress Mayor Chuck Radcliffe, followed by executive member Lorelie Mitchell, who shared a fascinating look back at the centre’s origins. She highlighted the contribution of the Olafson brothers, whose trust fund allocation helped turn the vision of a permanent gathering place for seniors into reality.

One of the ongoing challenges the centre has faced over the years has been attracting new members. In response, the committee made a key decision several years ago to lower the minimum age requirement from 60 to 55, hoping to encourage earlier engagement and involvement.

Longtime member Gwen Jefferies shared a personal story with the crowd, reflecting on what first drew her and her late husband Ivan to the Raystone Centre. “I suppose curiosity was the main reason Ivan and I decided to check out what goes on here,” she said with a smile, glancing around the room.

Through her words, Gwen painted a vivid picture of their first visit. “The pool tables, card tables, and shuffleboards were bustling with activity and friendly competition,” she recalled. “Stepping into the card room, we discovered they were all playing 500 – a game Ivan and I had never played. Well, they needed two more players, so we had a practice round, and many years later, I can say I’m still learning the game!”

On a more reflective note, Gwen addressed the question: “Why am I still here?” Her answer was heartfelt and wise. “It’s proven that as we age, we need to do a number of things to keep our minds sharp and our bodies limber. Socializing with others, challenging ourselves by learning something new, staying physically active, and simply getting out of the house – it all fits the bill for me. Even on days when I have to push myself out the door, it has always been worth it.”

Substantiating Gwen’s words, Carol Marshall, coordinator for Glenboro South Cypress Senior Independent Sevices, explained how her role coincides with the Raystone Centre and the variety of engaging activities she has introduced throughout the years.

“This centre is a very important hub in our community and we are very lucky to have it! It’s a gathering place for seniors to meet for some fun, competitive games or just to socialize,” said Carol, as the crowd nodded in agreement.
As the anniversary cake was sliced and served, guests mingled and chatted. Several commented to one another on how important the centre is to the community – yet admitted, despite their age, they had never really considered joining.

As one person noted, perhaps part of the hesitation is that no one likes to admit they’re getting older. The word “senior” can carry a stigma – but many at the event emphasized that staying active, social, and engaged helps keep people feeling young.

With more participation from those in their 50s and early 60s, the Raystone Centre could not only remain strong but grow even livelier in the decades to come – and, as many studies suggest, so would we.

As Gwen said, some days it takes effort to walk through the door – but it’s always worth it. And judging by the joy in the room, the Raystone Centre will continue to be worth it for the years to come.
