Now more than ever, things just aren’t made the way they used to be, and that includes the zippers, seams and pockets of our favourite items of clothing.
You may be one of the lucky ones who can mend clothing on your own, but if you aren’t you will find yourself in need of a good seamstress. Unfortunately, seamstresses are hard to find now with many of them having moved away or just giving it up.
Good news is always great to share, and we have some great news!
Eighteen-year-old Katrina Van Damme, hailing from Glenora is now offering first-class seamstress services!
“There used to be a lot of seamstresses in the area, but now there is no one,” Katrina said. “My mom had to send my brother’s jacket to Winnipeg to get the zipper fixed a few years ago, that shouldn’t happen.”
Young Katrina, who has inherited a true talent, has been sewing for 5 years. She has gone through the school sewing classes gleaning everything she could from them, but she didn’t stop there; she took her learning much further, teaching herself new tips and techniques.
“The classes in school gave me a base, but I am really mostly self-taught. I love to create and I love to draw, so it is perfect because I can draw my clothing ideas and create my own patterns.”
“So far I have created many stuffed animals, clothes, and several costumes but I want to get into more detailed and intricate costumes.”
It was a gift from her great-grandfather, Maurice Delichte, that was the turning point Katrina needed, that allowed her to open her own seamstress business.
Katrina’s great-grandfather gifted Katrina with her great-grandmother Lillian’s sewing machine.
This gift allowed Katrina to open her seamstress business taking in sewing repairs both big and small.
Katrina added, “zippers are the most common request, but I am willing to tackle just about any project.”
Congratulations on your new endeavour Katrina, we know you will excel.
