Marathon Monday Golfing for Cancer attracts several participants and funds
This year’s annual Marathon Monday events have taken on a slightly different look, but the mission remains the same; bringing people together through golf and raising funds for cancer research.
Locally, golfers Bryce Watson and Jordan Moore hit the links at the Glenboro Golf and Country Club on Monday, July 6th.
“We started around 8, which was a little late due to the skies opening up,” explained Watson.
Despite the early morning downpour, the determined duo pushed through and managed to complete an impressive 135 holes and raise close to $2,500.
This was the fourth time Watson and Moore teamed up for the event, twice at Pleasant Valley Golf Course and now twice in Glenboro. This year also marks the most holes they played as well as the most funds they have raised.
Meanwhile, Marathon Monday founders Patrick Law and Dylan Thornborough completed an impressive 150 holes at Picture Butte Golf Club in Alberta. The following day, four participants each took 50 shots to score an ace in the hole in one Shootout, hoping to win an additional $10,000 for the Canadian Cancer Society.
Although no hole in one was made, the challenge generated $5,000 towards the fundraising effort.
According to Thornborough, Marathon Monday continues to grow every year, with more golfers and communities getting involved.
“It’s growing more and more every year as more people continue to get involved in more and more locations,” he said. “I think people are realizing it’s a fun and rewarding day. You play as much golf as you can and raise money for a cause that affects so many.”
“I feel what Dylan and Patrick started is something great and the cause is something that affects everyone in some way in their lifetime,” said Watson when asked what drives his continued support. “Our marathon is just a very small portion of Marathon Monday.”
As of this week, the Marathon Monday campaign had raised approximately $13,000, with additional events and donations still to come. Thornborough noted that more Marathon Monday events have recently been added and final participation numbers are still being compiled.
Locally, the fundraising effort will continue with the Marathon Monday Golf Tournament on Saturday, July 18 at the Glenboro Golf & Country Club. The event will feature contests, prizes and a chance to win $10,000 with a hole-in-one.
More information, including final fundraising totals from Marathon Monday events across Western Canada, will be available once all participating locations have reported their results.
