Baldur Regals season comes to a close
The Border League playoffs have begun and ended for the Baldur Regals as they lost the first round, best-of-three series to Clearwater in two games. After finishing the season in second place in the West Division, Clearwater (8 wins, 4 losses, 1 tie) earned the right to host the first game of the playoffs against the third place Regals (6 wins, 6 losses, 1 tie) which was played Wednesday, July 8th.
The short-staffed Regals took it on the chin in game one, losing 11 – 1 with five of their regular starters not able to make the game. Travis Strain started on the mound for the Regals with Mike Wytinck and Teigan Follis coming on in relief.
The second game of the series took place Sunday afternoon in the extreme heat. It was hard on the players, umpires and even the fans. The scoring came in bunches and with their backs to the wall, the Regals scored 4 runs in the bottom of the last inning but it proved too little, too late as Clearwater won 9-6. Christian Gaulthier pitched first for the Regals with Lachlan Jones and Ayden Barr relieving him.
Clearwater now advances to the West Division Final against the Cartwright Twins who won their series against the Holland A’s in two straight games.
In the East Division, Altona has moved into the Final after beating Carman two games to zero, with Morden leading Winkler in the other series 1 game to zero. The second game was scheduled for July 15th and if necessary, the third game will be July 16th.
This brought the Regals season to an early end as the boys had high hopes of going further. The future looks bright as there are many young talented players that are determined to come back next year to improve their standing. The fans were treated to some excellent fielding and good pitching, with some entertainment when those things didn’t always happen as planned.
