Panther Girls battle to capture silver at provincials
The Glenboro/Carberry/Baldur Varsity Girls basketball team attended the “AA” Provincials held at the Warren Collegiate March 19–21, entering the tournament seeded second.
Their opening game was against Westpark, a team known for their toughness. The Panthers rose to the challenge and came out on top in a close contest, winning 65–56.
In the semifinal game, the Panthers faced Immanuel Christian of Winnipeg and once again proved victorious with a decisive 68–43 win. The victory advanced them to the championship game where they met the Souris Sabres.
The final was tightly contested, with the two teams trading momentum through the first three quarters. However, the Sabres went on a run in the fourth quarter that proved to be the difference.
“Unfortunately that was the difference in the game and we finished with the silver medal,” said coach Ryan Zadoronzy.
The Panthers had much to celebrate this season. Earlier in the year, the JV Girls basketball team captured bronze at the Junior Varsity Provincials, and both the Varsity and Junior Varsity teams brought home the Zone 6 & 7 banners.
“It was a very successful season for the Panther girls,” commented Zadoronzy.
Game Stars for the tournament were Charlie Unrau of Carberry against Westpark, Torah Robidoux of Glenboro in the semifinal game, and Kallie Anderson of Glenboro in the championship final. Charlie Unrau and Torah Robidoux were also named Provincial All-Stars.
It was a tremendous season for the Panthers girls and another strong year for Panther basketball.
