Taryn Richmond shares her adventures to Iceland
Taryn Richmond shared the adventures of her trip to Iceland with those in attendance at the latest Icelandic Canadian Club of Western Manitoba meeting held in Baldur at the Argyle Drop-In.
She was also able to share a montage of photographs she had taken while there, capturing the raw beauty of the land, some of the wildlife, and Mother Nature in action, with spectacular photographs of a roaring snowstorm that forced these travellers to turn around, not allowing them to complete their intended route of travelling the entire Ring Road, also known as Route 1.
Also joining Taryn on her Icelandic adventure were her mother, Natasha Richmond.
“We embarked on our adventure from Toronto, flying into the picturesque Keflavik International Airport. Upon arrival, we picked up our charming camper van, aptly named “Happy Campers,” and set off to explore the stunning landscapes of Iceland.
“Our itinerary featured breathtaking natural wonders, including the magnificent Skogafoss waterfall. We marvelled at the cascading water and the rainbows that often appeared in its mist. Another highlight was Gullfoss, a powerful double waterfall that left us in awe of its sheer volume and beauty.
“As we navigated the ever-changing Icelandic terrain, which is very different from Manitoba’s, we experienced a variety of challenges, including battling jet lag and facing unpredictable winds that could shift dramatically in moments.
“The weather took a turn for the worse when a major storm rolled in, forcing us to make the difficult decision to turn back before we could complete our journey around the entire Ring Road.
“Despite these setbacks, the journey was filled with breathtaking sights. We encountered wild horses grazing in the fields, marvelling at the vibrant purple lupines that dotted the landscape, and even lazy spotted seals lounging on the rocky shores.
“One of our memorable hikes took us near Hallormsstadur Forest, where we immersed ourselves in the serene beauty of nature, surrounded by lush greenery and the soothing sounds of the forest.
“After wrapping up our time in the wild, we returned to Reykjavik, where we explored the stunning architecture of the Harpa concert hall. Its colourful glass façade reflecting the harbour was a sight to behold.
“We had heard so much about the famous Icelandic hot dogs, but much to our disappointment, every stand we visited was sold out! This only added to the charm of our adventure, reminding us of the unexpected turns that come with travel.
“Thanks to the midnight sun, our days were delightfully long, allowing us to camp in secluded spots such as just outside Hofn and to the east of Reykjavik.
“The tranquil nights under the beautiful, expansive night sky were spectacular.
“Our exploration included hikes behind spectacular waterfalls and leisurely strolls through quaint towns like Vik and Hofn, where we soaked in the local culture and breathtaking scenery. Each moment in Iceland was an experience we won’t soon forget, filled with memories of nature’s grandeur and the joys of road-tripping through such a magical land.”
