Step It Forward continues to Inspire Active Living
The Glenboro ball diamonds were buzzing with excitement this past Sunday as twenty-five children – and their parents – scoured the fields in search of hidden Easter eggs.
Letti Defoort of Cypress River struck gold (or chocolate!) when she found the specially decorated egg tucked among the three diamonds, earning her a festive Easter basket prize.
The Easter Egg Hunt was one of many activities organized by Leteisha Berry through Step It Forward, a community initiative that shows no signs of slowing down.
Launched just a year ago, Step It Forward started as a summer challenge to get people of all ages moving – and it’s blossomed into a year-round movement for active living.
After wrapping up last summer with a hugely popular Family Fun Day, Berry and her volunteers have kept the momentum going, finding fresh ways to bring people together and encourage healthy habits.
Another fabulous program Berry organized throughout the winter months was the “Bucket List Challenge.”
Participants were encouraged to complete a variety of activities – ranging from baking cookies and shovelling snow to skating, making snow angels, creating vision boards, and even taking time for a relaxing bath. Jacob Elliott was the winner of the winter prize pack.
The wide range of tasks reflected Step It Forward’s mission to promote not just physical activity, but also creativity, community involvement, and self-care.
50/50 draws have been a steady favourite, and most recently, the group introduced a fun “Chase the Bunny” game, where participants purchased a numbered card in hopes of revealing the hidden bunny and winning a cash prize.
Berry commented that in addition to organizing challenges and activities, Step It Forward also holds regular fundraisers to help support its programming. “I would never be able to organize all this without help of many and Kelly Tirschman is one of the main faces on our committee.” She also commented she had many youth volunteers as well. “Today we had Tyden, Brooklynn and Ethan Berry along with Matt Tirschman, Evelyn Defoort and Westin Cronin helping hide the eggs.”
From fitness challenges to family events like Sunday’s egg hunt, Step It Forward continues to grow and it’s helping to build a stronger, more connected community along the way. All the proceeds from the activities and contests are donated to a variety of community projects.
