Belmont creates a classic skating rink

The Belmont Park Committee, consisting of Tara Smith, Jenny Steele, April Hoblyak, and a small army of volunteers have created a winter paradise that is proving to be a hot spot for all ages! They have created a classic skating rink on Williamsons Lake, located just outside the town of Belmont.

Volunteers Mike MacKay has done the flooding, and Connie and Gordie Vrooman have used their equipment to move the snow when it builds up beyond what can be shovelled away. Committee member Jenny and volunteer Kally have recently completed stringing 400 feet of lights to illuminate the rink and enable night skating.

“A lot of volunteers have helped set it up and keep it going,” shared committee member Tara Smith. “So many families and kids of all ages have used the rink so far. Everyone is really enjoying it!” Tara went on to explain that the Committee had initially planned to build the rink at Belmont Park; “Financially, we were not in the position to make this happen financially. We are planning on doing fundraising and are actively looking for grants. As soon as we are able, we will be putting up a permanent structure at the Park. We are probably going to kick off fundraising for the rink with a social.”

Tara mentioned they are always looking for volunteers. If you would like to help out, please contact Tara via text at 204-740-0567.

The Committee is also planning to host a family curling day at the Williamsons Lake rink in February. Stay tuned for updates.
