Foodbank fundraiser - the perfect way to help

On November 9th, the Belmont Hall played host to the annual Killarney Food Bank Fundraiser.

A group of talented musicians, including Russell Moffat, Bob Williamson, Dan and Alex Spring and Gail MacKay, took to the stage to play a huge variety of music, both old and new, that had the crowd up and dancing. When Achy Breaky Heart began, the dancers smoothly and effortlessly transitioned into a line dance, twirling and toe-tapping in synchronized harmony. (How do they do that?)

Bob Williamson started this annual food drive for the Killarney Food Bank (in his words) ‘many years ago’. When asked why he started this event, his answer was direct and heartfelt: “I enjoy helping others and giving back. Being a musician, this seemed like the perfect way I could help. With the support of other musicians and everyone who comes out to enjoy our music, bringing donations for the Killarney Food Bank, and hopefully staying for the supper that follows, we have been able to help many people in need. Without everyone coming together, this event would never have started, let alone making it an annual event. We have been so fortunate to have received all the support we have over the years, including behind-the-scenes supporters like Chapman Motors, who have generously covered the rent for the Belmont Hall for this event every year since we started.”

As the afternoon wound down, the musicians left the stage, put away their treasured instruments, and got ready for supper.

Forty-two people attended the supper feast, being served turkey, meatballs, potatoes, and all the trimmings. The Belmont Music in the Park Committee expertly catered the meal, and they most definitely outdid themselves; the meal was spectacular!

We spoke with Brandy and James, two Killarney Food Bank representatives, who were admittedly thrilled to be there. “Events like this go a long way to raising awareness of the growing dependence on food banks in all areas”, shared James.

“Volunteering at the Killarney Food Bank has allowed me to give back to our community and help make a positive difference in people’s lives. Events like this are incredible. Seeing the number of people coming out in support of the Killarney Food Bank is awesome”, added Brandy.

Congratulations to the organizers on another successful event!
