Information session held on the invaluable insights on the Victoria Lifeline Service

The RM of Victoria’s M.I.L.E.S. for Seniors Inc. program, led by Community Resource Coordinator Stephanie Clark, champions the cause of empowering seniors to live independently and safely.

Recently, an engaging information session took place at the Cypress Senior Centre, in Cypress River, featuring Vicki Russenholt, who delivered to a target audience invaluable insights on the Victoria Lifeline Service, as well as sharing essential strategies for health, safety, and well-being.

One of the most shocking points that Vicki conveyed was; “Most accidents happen in our own homes.” Going on to point out that; “As we age, the risk of falls presents a significant challenge that demands our attention.”

The session flew by as Vicki presented many tips and strategies to help minimize the risk of falling, enhance home safety, and emphasize the importance of taking care of ourselves both physically and mentally as we age.

Vicki highlighted crucial statistics regarding falls among seniors, underscoring the critical need for awareness and action. Falls can lead to serious injuries that may profoundly affect a person’s life.
We have the power to take simple yet effective measures to safeguard ourselves.

As we age, we tend to slow down. During this session, we learned why this was not the time to stop moving. Regular movement is essential for maintaining strength and balance as we get older. As Vicki pointed out, “That doesn’t mean you have to run a marathon, instead, it can include simple activities like chair yoga, which can significantly enhance flexibility and stability.”

(Note: Always consult with a healthcare professional before starting a new exercise regimen to ensure it suits your individual needs.)

Dehydration is a huge issue among older adults. Dehydration is often due to a reduced sense of thirst, so it is imperative to manage hydration proactively. Set a daily drinking schedule and include hydrating foods such as soups, cucumbers, and watermelon in your diet.

Nourishing meals play a pivotal role in supporting our overall health, helping to maintain mental clarity and contributing to strong muscles and bones, which are essential in fall prevention. When meal planning, remember to incorporate key nutrients like protein, vitamin D, and calcium.

Getting out in nature not only provides us with fresh air but also enables our bodies to absorb vitamin D naturally. This can elevate mood and inspire physical activity.

Vicki shared that as we age, it is common to resist using tools to assist with our mobility. She said it happens too often and emphasized that we should never hesitate to use canes, walkers, or grab bars if necessary. Relying on support tools enhances your safety while encouraging independence.

Have you had a review of your medications lately? Vicki pointed out that new or existing medications can have an impact on balance. Make it a priority to consult with your pharmacist regularly to review your medications and discuss any necessary adjustments.

Your home should be your sanctuary.

Get rid of tripping hazards, declutter your space, and ensure you have adequate lighting throughout your home.

Additionally, sturdy handrails on both sides of staircases are essential for preventing accidents.

For an added layer of security, consider the benefits of Lifeline services. Connect with your local senior independence support coordinator to learn more about this service.

As we navigate the aging process, it is critical that we remain proactive about our health and safety. With strategic planning and intentional adjustments, we can continue to live vibrant, independent lives well into our later years.
