Abby Wytinck opens Prairie & Pine Hair Salon in Cypress River

After graduating as a hairstylist from the Manitoba Institute of Trades and Technology (MITT), Abby Wytinck began her career at Salon H in Winnipeg. Now, she has returned to her roots in Cypress River where she has opened Prairie and Pine Hair Salon.

During her four years at Salon H, Abby (daughter of Steve and Corrie Wytinck) thrived on every aspect of her trade, from crafting fresh styles to experimenting with colour and highlights that showcased her creativity. She spoke fondly of the 11 other stylists she worked alongside, noting how much she enjoyed the camaraderie. Still, as much as she valued the experience, Abby was ready to return to a quiet life in the country and looked forward to the challenge of opening her own salon.

When the former Cypress River Electric building (presently owned by MCC) on Railway Avenue became available for rent, Abby knew the timing was perfect. The space was just what she was looking for, and with only minimal renovations needed, she was able to transform the former appliance and electrical shop into a warm, inviting, and spacious hair salon.

Although the décor offers a sense of coziness, the real warmth comes from Abby herself. It isn’t just her genuine smile that welcomes patrons, but the caring and sincere way she listens and accommodates their wishes.

As the interview came to a close, the sound of the door’s bell rang, announcing the arrival of a couple. She was hoping for a perm, and he was looking for a trim. In recent years perms have taken a back seat to straighteners, but they are making a comeback and Abby is ready to bring them back to Cypress River. “I haven’t received all my stock yet, but if you’d like to leave your phone number, I’ll definitely give you a call when it arrives,” she told them kindly.

This past weekend marked the official opening of Prairie and Pine, and Abby said she couldn’t have asked for a better start. “So many people stopped in offering good wishes and to see the shop. I was really overwhelmed and grateful for the positive response and community support!” For Abby, the outpouring of kindness affirmed exactly why she chose to return to her roots; the close-knit warmth of a community where neighbours show up for one another, making Cypress River the perfect place to build both her life and her salon.

Appointments with Abby can be made through 204-922-0499.
