Successful weekend for Panthers as hosts of provincials
Glenboro High School proved to be an excellent host to the MHSAA Basketball Provincials this past weekend as they welcomed 14 teams from all corners of the province. However the role of gracious hosts turned to serious and unrelenting action on the court as the girls and boys teams fought their way to the Gold Medal games on Saturday.
The championship game was a close one, it took the girls a bit of time to find the basket at first but the hole got bigger mid way through ending with a score of 47-37 for the Panthers.
Lexie Shearer was named tournament MVP and Charlie Shearer and Jane McLean were selected to the All-Star team.
The Panther Boys ended the championship with the Silver, losing to Frontier Mosakahiken Grizzlies with a score of 98-70. It was also a super close game until the second half when Frontier took the lead and the Panthers were just not able to close the gap. Tournament All-Stars were Kelby Diehl and Tucker Forbes.
Corey Forbes co convenor of the tournament commented that the event couldn’t have been better. “There were lots of great games. We couldn’t have done it without the help of all the staff, especially Bryce Watson.”
The school was also able to raise over $1200.00 through the 50/50 draw and raffle table. “The raffle table made approximately $600.00 after we paid for the prizes,” said Angie Gudnason staff member.
Right from the opening ceremonies and skills competitions to all the exciting game play the school was buzzing from start to finish and will be remembered positively from all those who took part.
Ryan Diehl school principal commented the hosting the provincials was a great opportunity to showcase our community and school. They received many compliments throughout the weekend and his hope is that all the teams had a wonderful experience. “A huge thank you to the staff and students of Glenboro School, the players, parents and convenors for the time commitment and efforts in making the event a success.”
Another hat that Ryan wears is that of coach of the boys team to which he said the varsity boys had a very successful year, losing only four games all season. “The boys should be very proud of their efforts and the silver medal after losing to a very strong team from Moose Lake.”
