Several changes announced at the Glenboro Agricultural Society annual general meeting
The Annual General Meeting for the Glenboro Agricultural Society took place February 22 at the Glenboro Community Hall.
A small crowd gathered in attendance in support of the dedicated Board and the massive amount of effort they put forward to keep the Ag Society vibrant and present. The Presidents Report – 2023 was submitted by Kathy Noel. The Board for 2024 is as follows: President: Kathy Noel; Secretary: Sara Smith; Treasurer: Jen McPhail. Directors: Kyla Coleman, Joyce Wilton, Verna Mowat, Ernie Bezaire, Wanda Jefferies, and Deedra Coleman.
‘There are big changes being planned for the ball diamond area of our grounds with the removal of the race track. Many trees will be planted, ball diamonds expanded upon and a walking trail created. The Turf Club will also be dissolved and together with them we are planning on renovating the newest barn so that it can be safely used for animals. Cullen’s removed their equipment from the barn area last summer and there are plans going forward to take down the oldest barn for safety reasons.”
Upkeep, projects and necessary upgrades for local buildings are always ongoing.
According to the Hall Report, submitted by Kyla Coleman, the Hall was awarded a Building Sustainable Communities Grant, and a Glenboro and Area Foundation grant during the 2022-2023 fiscal year.
So far, the shingles and ceiling tiles have been replaced, as has the trim along the east and west walls.
A municipal levy was received and is to be used towards running the Hall. Upcoming projects include: replacement of the freezer and cooler in the kitchen area, finding a solution for winter pipe freezing issues, repair and paint stage area, and refinishing the ample dance floor.
The 2023 Fair and the Demolition Derby reports were both submitted by Sara Smith. The reports outlined some of the challenges in 2023, and shared ideas for 2024.
It has been decided to change the date of the Fair to August 17 – in hopes that changing the date from July 1 will see more attendees as well as volunteers. The pancake breakfast has always been popular and will be held again in 2024, however the cold plate lunch will not be available. A food truck will be available for lunch and supper. There will be educational displays and vendor spaces available. An outside petting zoo has been secured with a large number of animals attending.
The Demolition Derby will also be held August 17 – planning for this event is still underway.
Verna Mowat and Joyce Wilton submitted a report for the annual Farmers Market.
2023 saw 9 Farmers Markets, and although the average number of vendors was not as high as hoped, the events were always well attended by the public.
The Horse Show Report, submitted by Kathy Noel shared that the entries for the light horse and pony show were very low for the 2023 season. It has been decided that in 2024, there will instead be a miniature horse show held.
The 2023 Campground Report, submitted by Albert Hamilton shared that construction crews stayed for only half of the last season, but have pre booked all of the 30 amp sites currently available. Town workers have been keeping the campgrounds trimmed and looking its best.
With highway workers, weekend baseball games and a big wedding coming up in June, in Albert’s words it, ‘looks like it could be a busy year for the campground.’
