Fundraiser serves the best waffles ever!
You may think you have tried the best waffles ever, but unless they were served at the Knights of Columbus Waffle breakfast held in St Alphonse on February 11, (or attended this annual event in previous years), you really haven’t had the best waffles ever!
The St. Alphonse Hall was packed to the rafters and the waffle makers never stopped.
The waffles were the perfect balance of crispy and light, with an array of toppings to choose from, and if you couldn’t decide, they were helpfully there to point out there was nothing wrong with a bit of everything. The waffle itself nearly filled the entire plate, leaving little room for the cooked to perfection breakfast sausage. Fortunately room was found and the copper coloured delicacies were nestled around the edge of the plate.
After that incredible breakfast, a nap would have been perfect, but maybe not a good idea.
We were able to speak with Past Grand Knight Ubald Desrochers about this annual event.
“It has been almost ten years since we have been hosting this waffle breakfast. It is a nice gathering to break up the winter, and a reason for families to come together,” noting that some family members came all the way from Winnipeg to join the festivities.
Ubald went on to share that it makes them (members of the Knights of Columbus) all feel humbled to be able to connect with and support the community and give back.
Donations are not only given to graduates with a connection to the Knights of Columbus, but they have supported the churches in Swan Lake and Mariapolis when donations were needed for their re-shingling projects, as well as giving support to fire victims trying to rebuild their lives after losing everything through a horrifying tragedy, and so much more.
In Ubald’s own words, “It makes you feel good to be able to help.”
Helping others and supporting their communities are two of the many positives that the Knights of Columbus are famous for.
It was hoped that the number of waffle breakfasts sold in 2024 would exceed last year’s sales – it was very close, but didn’t quite make it.
Last year there were 150 breakfasts served and this year there were 145 – so close! Unfortunately this year the icy conditions did keep some people at home, and understandably so.
There was also a rainbow auction with a huge variety of prizes available to be won.
According to Mark Lebeau who was one of the busy waffle chefs, each Knight provides a prize for the auction – and what an amazing job they did!
