Fundraiser launched for playground renovations

For over 15 years, the Glenboro Children’s Learning Centre Inc. (GCLCI) has been a cornerstone of early childhood care in the community, nurturing children from 12 weeks to 12 years old. Currently serving families from Glenboro, the RM of South Cypress, Cypress River, Carberry, and the RM of Prairie Lakes, the centre has been in high demand since opening its doors in 2008, always maintaining a waiting list.

One of the most cherished features of the GCLCI is its playground, a space where children can run, play, and enjoy fresh air. However, the playground, built just a year after the centre’s opening, is now showing signs of wear and tear, prompting the GCLCI to launch a fundraising campaign for much-needed renovations. “Our existing playground needs to be completely renovated to accommodate a specific age group, address safety concerns and in general, replace very worn out equipment and improve functionality,” explained Shelby Bellow of the Board of Directors.

With space for 4 infants, 24 preschoolers, and 10 school-aged children, the centre plays a crucial role for working families in the region. A year ago, the GCLCI expanded its preschool program, allowing more children to join. However, with the expansion came new regulations requiring additional playground space to accommodate the growing number of kids.In response, the Glenboro School and Prairie Spirit School Division granted the centre more land, enabling them to create a designated play area for infants and toddlers.

Now, to continue providing a safe and stimulating outdoor environment, the GCLCI is calling on the community to help fund the renovations which will feature a rubber safe surface, different textile elements, sensory items and types, new play equipment, along with nature and gardening aspects. Their aim is to incorporate structures for learning and sensory development. The price tag is approximately $200,000 and although the project has received many very generous donations from local businesses, families and individuals, they have only reached the 12% mark to date.

The Board of Directors embarked on this project a year ago, and while they have applied for government funding and are awaiting approval, additional donations are still needed to reach their goal. Tax receipts will be issued for all contributions, and community support will be essential in bringing this much-needed playground renovation to life, ensuring a brighter and more functional future for the children and staff of the GCLCI.
