Old rail beds in the area to become new trails
In the fall of 2020, Westman ATV Association (Westman ATV) entered into agreements with the RM of Argyle and the RM of Prairie Lakes regarding the care, maintenance and use of the trail following the old rail bed stretching from Ninette to Baldur.
Who is Westman ATV?
According to their website (westmanatv.com), “Westman ATV Association is a non-profit organization that strives to provide a safe and inclusive place for people who enjoy the recreational sport of all-terrain vehicle riding, to help with charitable organizations.”
Their mission is:
“We promote a safe driving experience for all members along with social outings. We encourage the active participation of all members to enjoy and preserve the environment for all future generations. Be part of our plans for the future with participation and resolute commitment to provide great recreational activities to enhance life’s experience for all our members and our community.”
Chad, President of the Westman ATV Association is excited about this multi-use trail and being able to move forward with plans that have been in the works for a few years.
“This trail not only allows riders to enjoy a fantastic tour, but it also supports increased economic development in the area that everyone benefits from.”
The trail will be used year round with ‘Snoman’ grooming and maintaining the trail for the use of snowmobilers during the winter months and Westman ATV taking over the trail’s maintenance and care in the spring when the snow is gone, continuing until late fall when the snow again falls.
A generous landowner allowed for a piece of land next to the trail in Ninette to be used for a staging area (an area for trailers and vehicles to be parked).
In Baldur, there will be a designated staging area near Veteran Park.
Chad went on to say, “we want our trails to be family friendly and safe for everyone, and will continue to make positive changes.”
If you have been near the trail you may have noticed several new signs already placed along the trail.
Fortunately, this year Westman ATV was able to secure funding to assist in the maintenance and signage needed for the trail, as well as the purchase of a new bobcat tractor that will ensure that maintenance can be done quickly and efficiently.
Chad admitted, “We wouldn’t be able to have the trail looking like it does without our amazing volunteers, everyone has been fantastic.”
Chad also wanted to give a personal shout out to vice president Tyrus, Ken, the RM’s for their cooperation and support, Bernie and Monty for cutting grass and giving updates.
