THIS WEEK'S TOP STORY

GREAT ART CAMP ... The Tiger Hills Arts Association hosted a Summer Art Camp at the Baldur Recreation Centre from August 12th - 19th. Twenty students took part in the camp which had the theme of "Out of Africa" where they experienced pieces of the African culture through dance, music, visual art and story telling. Above: Musician and choreographer, Casimiro Nhussi, along with (left) Jada Ricard, (right) Peighton Johnson and (back right) Tayla Gudnason were performing one of their African dances at the showcase afternoon.

Casino construction to move ahead
Since the original announcement was made that a plan was in place to build a new aboriginal casino north of Spruce Woods Provincial Park, little bits of information have been filtering down to the general public, but now it looks like plans are in the final stages as backers put a business plan and the $40-million financing required for the project, in place.A sod-turning ceremony will be taking place some time in the third week of September at the site that is approximately 16 kilometres south of No. 1 Highway between Carberry and Glenboro, near the provincial park, but on Swan Lake First Nations land.

Swimmers to avoid dense algae blooms in area lakes
The number of blue-green algae cells was above the recreational water quality guideline at Pelican Lake (north and south beaches) on Aug. 16 and at Rock Lake (Friesen’s Beach) Aug. 17 but the concentration of an algae toxin, microcystin-LR, was below the recreational water quality guideline at all three beaches.  Bathers are reminded to avoid swimming in dense algae blooms and to watch for advisory signs posted at beaches.  Information on advisory signs is available at www.gov.mb.ca/waterstewardship/quality/beaches.html#advisorysigns.
